PRAY FOR HAITI 40 DAYS OF PRAYER DAY 23

Dear Friends and Colleagues in the Faith

PRAY FOR HAITI 40 DAYS OF PRAYER DAY 23

Nehemiah 1:5-7
“O LORD, God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and obey his commands, 6 let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father’s house, have committed against you. 7 We have acted very wickedly toward you. We have not obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses.

As Nehemiah prays to the Lord, it is easy to see how engaged he is on behalf of Israel. He has taken Israel’s situation and made it his own. First he ask, God hear the prayer your servant is praying. He did not say hear the cries of the people of Israel, he made it personal, hear my prayers oh Lord. Second, he says he’s been praying day and night. Nehemiah has been praying non-stop for several months. That means this was important to him. Third, he says I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father’s house, have committed against you. In Nehemiah’s confession he tells God I am part of the problem too. What’s amazing is that Nehemiah had every opportunity to disconnect himself from Israel, he was living in a foreign country, he had a good government job, probably a nice house, but he did not. He identified with the suffering of his people. Instead of turning a blind eye and a deaf ear he engaged God on behalf of his people. As we pray tonight, can we engage ourselves on behalf of Haiti as Nehemiah did when he intercede for Israel?
