Healing our land starts with believers not neglecting the poor. Jesus Christ loves and ministers to the poor people. He said the poor will always be among you. There aethree things we display when we neglect the Poor: 1) To neglect the poor is to Christ. Matt 25:42-45. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’ 44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ 45 “He will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ According to this verse when we neglect those who are hungry and thirsty you are neglecting Christ himself. Haiti have an over abundance of hungry and thirsty people. You can go right in to the capitol of that nation and see people who are hungry and thirsty. As soon as you come out of the airport they greet you with their hands extended out begging for food and money. If you ever want to minister to Christ, go to Haiti and serve. Healing our land begins by giving a helping hand to the hungry and thirsty. If we take care of their physical hunger and thirst, they will be open to receive food for their spiritual hunger and thirst.

PRAY: Ask God to help us meet their need for physical and spiritual Hunger and Thirst.

ACT: Get involved in supporting ministries that are already feeding the hungry and thirsty.

Healing our land includes addressing poverty. The poor, the lowly, the outcast and the destitute are words that describe majority of the people living in Haiti. Haiti is known as the poorest country in the western hemisphere and this was before the earthquake. Now, Haiti has plunged deeper into its poverty and we cannot sit idly by and do nothing. In Haiti you have the rich and you have the poor. There are virtually no middle class citizens. Jesus was very concerned about the poor; Jesus identified with the poor for He himself lived as one. Matthew 8:20 Jesus replied, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head. As Jesus proclaimed His mission on earth in Luke 4:18-19, it was primarily to the poor; “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor. Also, Jesus’ main audience was the poor. Where ever Jesus went the poor followed Him and He preached to them, He ministered to them and He loved them.

PRAY: Ask God to give us a heart that longs to help the poor.

ACT: GIVE! Give consistently, Give constructively, Give passionately and Give abundantly.

Healing our land includes creating opportunities for women in Haiti to help rebuild Haiti after the earthquake. While a majority of Haitian women have shouldered the responsibility of meeting the needs of children, the elderly, orphans, homeless and thousands of newly disabled people, they are often overlooked when it comes to making policy in areas that affects the very people they are the “experts” in providing care for. It was also after an earthquake that Jesus used the women who served him to set policy. Matt 28:2 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. Prior to Jesus, never before have a Rabbi used women to go tell the good news of God. A new policy was set and women were at the forefront of it. They were in essence evangelist. Matt 28:10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.” The earthquake in Haiti created an opportunity to begin setting new policies. Women are the backbone of Haiti; they are the primary caretakers and primary provider therefore, they should be involved in making policy. As Jesus sets the example, Haiti should follow.

PRAY: Ask the Lord to open doors for the women of Haiti to have a strong voice in making policy.

ACT: The Church could mobilize women groups to begin to effect policy in their own little community and then involve other communities; and as it begins to bring positive changes, it will affect the nation.

Healing our land includes justice for Haitian women. As we mentioned yesterday Jesus was very concerned about women in a time where Rabbis avoided women. Women could not sit at a Rabbi’s feet and learn. Jesus however, not only welcomed women to serve in his ministry, He taught them also. Luke 10:39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. Jesus cares for the hurting women. The woman who washed Jesus’ feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair (see Luke 7:36-48) was a hurting women. The woman at the well was a hurting woman at the well was a hurting woman and Jesus tended to their pain.
Many of our Haitian women in Haiti are hurting. One of the greatest injustices against our Haitian women in Haiti after the earthquake is rape. Rape was already a serious problem in Haiti even before the earthquake. The United Nations reported in 2008 that almost half of the girls and young women living in slums like Cité Soleil and Martissant had been raped. Since the earthquake the situation for women has gotten even worse, rights groups say. Rapes have gone up threefold in Port-au-Prince, according to Refugees International, a Washington-based group.

PRAY: Ask the Lord to 1. Help Haiti establish a just justice system, 2. Safe-House for women who have been raped and 3. Support for rape victims who have to raise the child of a rape.

ACT: The Haitian Churches in US and Haiti can provide numbers 2 & 3 from the above prayer requests.

The next group of people we will be focusing on as we ask the Lord to heal our land are the women. Jesus was also concerned about the women. In a day and time when Rabbis would not entertain women in their presence, Jesus not only welcomed them, women played a major role in His ministry. They were very resourceful to Jesus’ ministry and met many of His needs; In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there (Mark 15:41). Jesus depended on the women who followed him to provide for His basic needs that allowed His ministry to be effective. We will look at some of those need as the week progress. Haitian women are very resourceful to Haiti. Aside from their vital roles as mothers and providing basic needs for their families; they are the backbone of the commerce industry in Haiti. When you go to the market place they are the primary merchants. They are the movers and shakers. They know how to negotiate and make deals. Though they work in deplorable conditions, putting food on the table for their family and sending their children to school are their priorities.

PRAY: Ask the Lord to help the women in Haiti to make ends meet and improve their working and living conditions.

ACT: Support organizations that provide micro-loans to women. These micro-loans allow women to start their own businesses Many of them have been very successful.

Jesus loves children and is very concerned about their well being. There are two types of people God said He would avenge; they are widows and orphans (children without parents). When it was normal for Rabbis to shun children, Jesus welcomed them and embraced them. He used children to illustrates how we need to become if we are to enter the kingdom of heaven (see Mark 10:13-16). Also, in Mark 9:36-37 it says, He took a little child and had him stand among them. Taking him in his arms, he said to them, 37 “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.” Jesus connected treating children kindly by welcoming them in His name with welcoming Jesus himself. When was the last time you made a child feel welcome in your presence. In Haiti, often the rule is; children should be seen and not heard whereas; Jesus demonstrated children should be seen and heard.

PRAY: Ask God to elevate the needs of the children of Haiti and bring it to the forefront of the media so that it may receive proper attention.

ACT: Support organizations that are giving children a voice. Organizations such as Children In Need Haitian Project. Go to www.cinhp.org visit and support their work.

Today, as we celebrate the birth of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ and also pray for the children in Haiti, we realize that they have something in common. The baby Jesus and the children in Haiti needed someone to protect them and care them because of the dangers that threatened their lives. When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” Matthew 2:13 Jesus’ life was threatened and needed protection from Herod. There are still many with the spirit of Herod in Haiti who wants to harm our children. It is our responsibility to pray and act on their behalf. There are several good organizations who are in Haiti helping to provide and protect our children I invite you to check out www.restorehaiti.com. Restore Haiti is partnered with Restoration Ministries, a local church in Jacmel, Haiti to provide a child sponsorship program. This program has grown to provide over 120 children per day with a hot meal and education that includes tuition, school uniforms and books. The number of sponsored children is increasing daily as more sponsors come on board. Visit their website and see what else they are doing.
PRAY: Ask the Lord to raise up people who will help protect, provide and guide and children in Haiti.
ACT: Support individuals and organizations such as “Restore Haiti” who will provide a safe haven for our children in Haiti.

As we are praying and asking the Lord to heal our land, we must begin with Haiti’s youngest citizens; our children. Since the earthquake, our children have been exposed to many dangers
The U.N. estimates that as many as 300,000 Haitian children are separated from their families and live in unpaid domestic servitude. They typically work from dawn till dusk with little or no time to play or form friendships. Many are physically, emotionally, and sexually abused. And few are given the chance to attend school. Another major danger for Haiti’s children is trafficking. Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive said in an exclusive interview with CNN's Christiane Amanpour on Wednesday that after the quake, because of the growing number of orphans, illegal child trafficking is "one of the biggest problems that we have."
Our children are Haiti’s future, if we don’t protect, take care and provide for them now Haiti will have no future.

Pray: Ask God to turn our hearts towards Haiti’s children. That Haiti’s Child welfare laws would be enforced and the children would be protected.

Act: Churches in Haiti need the support of the Diaspora churches to start new educational programs and fund or support existing educational programs for the children. Every church in Haiti should a have school with qualified and well trained teachers. We have to make it Happen

We are at the halfway point of our 40 Days of Prayer for Haiti. In the first half we have been praying for our spiritual growth and development. This corresponds with the first part of 2Chronicles 7:14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin. This preparation was necessary so that we can pray effectively for the needs of Haiti and its people. A good illustration of that is when the flight attendant on an airplane gives the instructions about securing your oxygen masks if the cabin were to lose pressure. They instruct us to first secure your own mask on your face and then assist the person next to you. So for the first 20 days we have been securing our own spiritual oxygen masks so that we can be healthy enough to assist Haiti in becoming healthy. Now we will turn our focus of the last portion of that scripture and will heal their land. For the next 20 days we will focus on the specific areas in Haiti that need a concentrated effort of focus praying. We will ask you to do two things for every topic: Pray and Act.
Our first area of focused concentrated prayer is for the Children in the orphanages in Haiti . Children make up 38% of the population (CIA World Factbook demographic statistics). Prior to the January 12th earthquake there were 380,000 children in orphanages. Now untold numbers of innocent children still traumatized from the lost of parents and siblings are left to face life in an orphanage. Many are left to struggle with the questions “why?” and “who”? Why are my mommy and daddy gone? Why I can’t go back home to my house and neighborhood? Why can’t I see my friends anymore? Who will love me like my mommy and daddy did? Who will take care of me? These and many other questions loom in their thoughts. The pain and adjustment process may take years to overcome. However, if the people of God would do two things we can alleviate much of their burdens.
Pray: Ask God to allow the healing process to be healthy process for these traumatized children. Like Joseph who was able to forget the pain of his father’s house, Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh. “For,” he said, “God has made me forget all my hardship and all my father’s house.” (Gen 41:51) Pray and ask God that they would not be scarred by the memories of january 12, 2010.
Act: Encourage and support and Haitian individuals and Haitian Churches in the US and in Haiti to adopt these children and give them a home.

Everyone rejoices when a baby is born and watches in knowing anticipation for each new ability he will develop. In time, he will learn to crawl, eat solid food, walk, and talk. When a baby does not show these signs of growth, it is often an indication that something is seriously wrong. In a similar manner, the writer of Hebrews cites the lack of spiritual growth in the lives of believers as cause for concern: “When … ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again …” (Hebrews 5:12).
As newborn babes, we are to desire the sincere milk of the Word that we may grow thereby. (See I Peter 2:2.)
This instruction from the Apostle Peter contains several practical considerations for spiritual growth. First, the designation of a “newborn babe” presupposes a mother who has brought forth the child through labor and is now ready and available to give personal attention to that child. Every new believer needs a loving and dedicated mentor who will care for him. This is discipleship and requires spiritual effort even as Paul stated: “I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you” (Galatians 4:19).
The second need is to create a desire for spiritual food. Early child training included putting wholesome food on the palate of the baby’s mouth. This would help the child to develop an appetite for that food.
The third factor for spiritual growth is to give Biblical truth that a new Christian will be able to understand and apply. At first, a baby can receive only his mother’s milk, which contains nutrients that help prevent infection and disease. However, as the child matures he can begin to eat other foods. As a Christian matures in his walk with the Lord by increasing his discernment of what is good and evil, he will be able to go from receiving the “milk of the Word” to receiving “strong meat.” (See Hebrews 5:13–14.)
The next factor is spiritual maturity. One of the signs of spiritual growth is doctrinal stability. (See Ephesians 4:14.) A mature Christian has the ability to “rightly divide the Word of truth” (see II Timothy 2:15), and also to teach others the same truths that they have learned from the one who discipled them. (See II Timothy 2:2.)
One of the clearest evidences of spiritual maturity is the ability to lead others to Christ and then disciple them.
The great need of our day is for mature disciples who can teach others the commands of Christ so that they will in turn be able to disciple others from a newborn babe to a mature disciple maker. This is God’s mandate in the Great Commission and this is the way to be a blessing to all the families of the earth. (See Matthew 28:19–20.)
How would you rate your own spiritual growth? How discerning are you of what is good and what is evil? How many others have you led to Christ? How many are you now discipling? Let’s make spiritual growth a priority in our lives so that we “may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing” (James 1:4). If our Haitian churches would take these steps seriously, Haiti will be transformed and lives will be changed. (IBLP/MJP)

Understanding the Born again Process Part 2

Transformation of the soul is a process. It does not happen instantly like a birth does. Paul affirmed this when he wrote to the church at Ephesus: “That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; and be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness” (Ephesians 4:22–24).
The power to transform the mind, will, and emotions comes by a continual filling of the Holy Spirit.
Ephesians 5:18 tells us to “be filled with the Spirit.” This instruction is given in the present imperative tense, which is a command to do something in the future and involves continuous or repeated action. We are to keep on being filled with the Spirit. How do we do this? By being in fellowship with the Holy Spirit, Who convicts us of sin, righteousness, and judgment to come. John 16:8.
In addition to transforming the soul, the body must be presented as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God. Then, we are to yield our members to God as instruments of righteousness. Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. Romans 6:13. To yield them to sin is to voluntarily make ourselves the slaves of sin. We should rejoice in the spirit’s new birth, but let’s not forget the need to renew our minds daily with scripture and to yield the members of our bodies to God. All of this requires the grace of God and asking Him daily for the power of the Holy Spirit to be at work in our lives. Our spiritual fitness is important and necessary as we pray for Haiti. Therefore, renew your mind daily, a nation is depending on you. (IBLP/MJP)

Understanding the Born again Process Part 1

When we are born again, we receive a new nature from God, 2 Peter 1:4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
In fact, the Apostle John declares, “Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God” (I John 3:9). Why, then, do Christians still sin? At salvation the spirit is reborn, but the soul still needs to be transformed, and the body dedicated to God.
In explaining the new birth, Jesus said, “… That which is born of the Spirit is spirit” (John 3:6). Nothing is said of the soul (mind, will, and emotions), which still needs to be transformed. Thus, we are told, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind …” (Romans 12:2). In order for this renewal to take place we must “… receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls” (James 1:21).
When we are “born of the Spirit” (see John 3:8), the Holy Spirit indwells the spirit, and we are then able to have continual fellowship with God. Paul explains this in I Corinthians 2:12: “Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.” Once we understand what it means to be born again we are able to live more effectively for God and pray more effectively for others. There are five vital signs that should be checked to determine if we had a genuine born again experience. Yesterday we saw the first two: A new awareness of sin and a new desire to stop doing evil things. The next sign that should be checked to determine if we had a genuine born again experience
3. A new love for God’s Word. “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby” (I Peter 2:2). There should be a desire to not only read God’s word but know it. You want to know God’s commands and His will for your life. “And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments” (I John 2:3).
4. A new love for fellow believers. At salvation, there is an immediate bond of fellowship with other Christians, because we are now members together of the body of Christ. “We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. …” (I John 3:14). You love to be around other believers. You may not get along with everyone but you generally enjoy being with the family of God. There’s a mutual love and respect that you have for one another. David said “I was glad when they said unto me let us go into the house of the Lord.
5. A strong desire to witness to others. Because you have been transformed, renewed in your heart and mind you want to share what God has done for you. How many of us who have know the Lord for several years and we do not witness to the lost. How many of us are afraid to witness. We fear rejection and ridicule. There are people who the Lord place in your circle of influence that your pastor, elders or deacons will be able to reach. They will respond to you better than anyone else. Like the women at the well, when she encountered Jesus she went back and told the people in her town. Jesus said: For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” Mark 8:38

Are these “vital signs” present in your life? If these evidences are lacking in the life of someone who claims to be a believer, let’s make sure he truly understands what it means to be born again. (IBLP/MJP)

An important procedure takes place as soon as a baby is born. A trained attendant carefully checks specific vital signs to confirm that the baby is alive and well. A similar procedure should be followed when someone is born again. Being born again is a supernatural work of the Holy Spirit and is accompanied by visible evidences in the person’s life. There are five vital signs that should be checked to determine if we had a genuine born again experience:
1. A new awareness of sin. When we are born again, we receive the Holy Spirit. He enables our consciences to discern words, thoughts, and actions that displease the Lord. “Hereby know we that we dwell in him [Jesus], and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit” (I John 4:13). Because the Spirit of the Lord is in us we become acutely aware when we sin grieve Him. Things we used to do that did not bother us we now pay close attention to such as gossiping, unforgiving, uncaring attitude. When we have truly paced our trust in Christ we become aware of sin.
2. A new desire to stop doing evil things. Many have said that after being born again they stopped drinking, taking drugs, cursing, being immoral, and committing a host of other sins. This desire to stop sinning comes because “whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin [habitually or characteristically] “No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God. (I John 3:9). They do not have the mindset to purposely go out and sin, they don’t want to sin. My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. Notice the second sentence, it doesn’t say “when you sin…” it says “If you sin…” indicating that sinning is not a normal part of our daily lives.

Are the first two of the five experiences true for you now as a child of God as it was when you first placed your trust in Him? Do you still have an awareness of sin and a strong desire to stop doing evil things? If not, you have to ask yourself am I truly born again. As we pray let us examine our relationship with Jesus; ask those hard questions about your salvation.

If God were to give you anything you would ask for to help Haiti, what would you request? I’m sure we would come up with some excellent requests that would affect the presidential election, the economy and alleviate the suffering. When God told Solomon that He would give him anything he asked for, Solomon could have asked for riches, fame, power, or long life. Instead, Solomon requested the one thing that would bring him all of these: “Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart … that I may discern between good and bad” (I Kings 3:9). (KJV)
Where we are today are the results of decisions made in the past. The success and prosperity of an individual or a nation rest squarely on their ability to make good decisions. Good decisions are based on how well you can discern between what’s good and evil. It’s clear we have discernment crisis both in the secular as well as in the sacred world. This discernment crisis stems from a heart that lacks understanding. A heart that doesn’t seek to know or please God is a heart that lacks understanding because; only God and his word can provide guidance to discern between good and evil. It is God who determines what’s good and what’s evil. So when Solomon asked for an understanding heart it pleased God. “And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.” (I Kings 3:10). Let us also please God. Let us pray the following prayer for Haiti’s leadership as well as for ourselves: “Lord, give me an understanding heart that I may discern between good and bad.”

Ezekiel 3:18–19: “When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. Yet if thou warn the wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.”

This same message is repeated in Ezekiel 33:8–9, which gives it double importance!! These Scriptures have instilled in me a sense of urgency to proclaim the Gospel.
Farmers labor many months for a crop, but have only a small window of time to harvest it before it spoils in the field.
I once heard a story about an 11-year-old boy who bundled up on a Sunday afternoon and said to his father, “Okay, Dad, I’m ready.”
His father, who was a pastor, said, “Ready for what?”
“To go out like we always do and pass out tracts.”
The dad responded, “Son, it is very cold outside, and it is pouring down rain.”
The surprised son replied, “But, Dad, aren’t people still going to hell even though it is raining?”
The son convinced his father to let him go out alone. After two hours of walking in the rain, he was soaking wet. With one final tract he approached the nearest house and rang the doorbell. He rang it again and again with no response. Finally the door slowly opened and a very sad-looking woman said, “What can I do for you, son?”
With a smile he said, “Ma’am, I just want to tell you that Jesus really loves you, and I want to give you my last Gospel tract that will tell you all about Jesus and His great love.”
The following Sunday morning the pastor asked if anyone had a testimony to share. A woman stood up and said, “Last Sunday I no longer had any hope or will to live. So I went to my attic and prepared to hang myself. As I stood on a chair with a rope tied around my neck, I was about to jump, but then I heard the doorbell ringing. I thought I would wait until it stopped, but it kept on ringing. Finally, I loosened the rope and went to answer the door. I could hardly believe my eyes! The most radiant, angelic boy I had ever seen stood there telling me that Jesus loved me. I accepted the tract he offered me, read every word, and became a Christian.”
Jesus tells us that there is a bumper crop waiting to be harvested and warns us, “Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest” (John 4:35). Haiti is a unique harvest field that is ripe. The people in have very little hope. Many are living in darkness facing trials and tribulations. They are ready to hear and receive the gospel. Let us make an extra effort to reach out to Haiti with the gospel. (IBPL/MJP)

As wise children of God we must always look at the bigger picture. This means recognizing that whatever happens to us is not the whim of fate, or the will of man, but the work of God. If a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without God’s approval, neither can anyone attack us without God’s permission.
If we view revilers as our enemies, we will get angry and discouraged, but if we see them as agents for our good and God’s glory, we will rejoice!
Paul was tormented and attacked so painfully that he pleaded with God three times to deliver him. When God explained that this messenger (agent) from Satan was allowed for the purpose of keeping Paul humble so that the power of God would rest upon him, Paul gloried in the assault and took pleasure in it. (See II Corinthians 12:6–10.)
Job had the same insight. Satan was clearly responsible for the destruction of Job’s children, possessions, and health; yet, Job did not say, “God has given, and Satan has taken away.” Instead, he said, “The LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away…” (Job 1:21).
God causes the wrath of men to praise Him by using revilers to bring about the very achievements that they ridiculed.
The brothers of Joseph reviled him for his preposterous dreams that one day they would bow down before him. In an act of hate and envy, they sold him as a slave, which actually brought his dreams to pass. Later, he told them, “Ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good” (Genesis 50:20).
Whenever God’s people are reviled against, God somehow turns their suffering into an object that fulfills His purpose in their lives and as a result the praise and rejoice in the Lord. Haiti is being reviled by Satan and evil corrupt people. The political landscape shows very little hope, the economy is almost inexistence, and the suffering continues to mount. As we look at the bigger picture, let it spur us on to pray knowing that God will fulfill His plan for Haiti and bring rejoicing to a downcast people. Let the Haitian churches unite their voices in prayer for Haiti. (IBLP/MJP)

The crowds followed Jesus, but only those closest to Him heard the rich teaching He gave along the way. There were others who followed Him from afar. (See John 19:38.) John followed Jesus as closely as he could. As a result, John heard rich truths, which he shares in his writings.
Closeness is determined by how well we can hear Jesus speak to us, and this ability is determined by how much we meditate on His Word day and night.
John was one of the three who were in Jesus’ “inner circle.” He was with Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration and on the mount of Calvary. He sat right next to Jesus at the Last Supper and wanted to sit next to Him in His kingdom. Because of this very close relationship, John shared truths from Jesus that are found in no other gospel or epistle.
For example, John recorded the secret of intimate fellowship and effective discipleship through meditation on the commands of Christ. “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him” (John 14:21). John further emphasized the importance of meditation when he wrote, “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you” (John 15:7).
Secrets bind the spirits of people together. Jesus wants to share His secrets with us, but we must follow closely to hear them. As we pray today, examine your distance with the Lord and draw near. (IBLP)

Given all what’s going on in Haiti, there has not been much media coverage from the major media outlets. Haiti is no longer on the forefront of what is called newsworthy reporting. We must thank God and pray for those who have visited and tried to keep Haiti in the news. Pray for Anderson Cooper, former Presidents Bill Clinton and George Bush, First Lady Michelle Obama and former governor of Alaska Sarah Palin who visited Haiti this past weekend with Pastor Franklin Graham (Billy Graham's son). Every time someone of notoriety goes to Haiti it brings global attention to the suffering and the problems that plagues that nation. We must also pray for the tens of thousands of regular normal people like you and me who gives and goes to Haiti to work with no cameras, no reporters and no fanfare. Haiti need all of the help it can get. As the Haitian churches are committed to praying for Haiti, don’t forget to pray for those who don’t get the accolades, praise and rewards from man but who are waiting for a greater reward from God. They look to hear ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ Matt 25:21

Haiti is going to recount the votes from the November 28th Presidential elections. What should our response be? Criticize, Protest or Pray. The most powerful weapon we have is prayer. We must pray for those who are in office now and pray for those who will soon take office. Pray for President Rene Preval God can still use him in his final days to do justice for the Haitian people. Pray for Jude Celestin, Michel Martelly and Mirlande Manigat; one of them will be president. 1Timothy 2:1 I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. They hold the key which allows its people to live peaceful and quiet lives. Peace and security is not present in Haiti right now with protests still going on in the streets. There were reports of shooting in an area called Martissant yesterday. When believers pray for those in authority, God has a way of getting hold of their hearts and moving it in the direction He desires; no matter who they are or whether they believe in God or not.

Our 4th point on what you shouldn’t do when your conscience tells you that you have sinned.
Don’t confuse remorse or regret with repentance. The truth of the matter is that we can feel remorse without ever repenting. Look at Esau who sold his birth right for a bowl of stew (Genesis 27:34). When he realized his birthright was gone and could not be attained, he wept bitterly. He begged his father saying “Haven’t you reserved any blessing for me?” verse 36. He regretted selling his birthright but he did not repent instead he plotted to kill his brother.

Point number 5; Don’t blame someone else. It is easy to blame someone else for our sins. Think of an abusive husband, wife, parent, child, boyfriend or girlfriend. After they have heaped their abuse on their victim and notice the great damage they have caused, they would say “look at what you made me do.” “You caused me to hit you.” “You caused me to curse at you.” They fail to realize that they are the violators and perpetrators. They have sinned, they have transgressed. They must repent!

The 6th and last point is: Don’t delay. So often we like to put off the difficult things we must face. However, like David said in Psalm 51, “For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.” As children of God, our conscious constantly and continuously flashes our sins before us. The Holy Spirit continues to convicts us. He want us to deal with it right away without dely. Every time we push our sins to the back of our mind, the Holy Spirit waits until you least expect it and brings it right back to the front of your mind. He does not want you to delay your repentance. So, repent now.

A brief update on Haiti to assist you as you pray.
Haiti is experiencing turmoil in the wake of the elections. Thousands of protesters were out on the streets, erecting barricades and setting fires. They were furious that government-backed candidate Jude Celestin, the protege of President Rene Preval, apparently will go on to a runoff vote while Michel Martelly finished third in official results and is probably eliminated. The official preliminary results have law professor and former first lady Mirlande Manigat in first with 31.4 percent of the vote and Celestin next with 22.5. Martelly has 21.8 percent.

Yesterday I participated in a telephone conference with Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand’s Senior Advisor, Elana Broitman, who recently visited Haiti as a member of the Clyburn Codel, and was granted an opportunity to observe Haiti’s presidential election. Here are some of the problems that led to the protests: Voters names were not at the voting sites, voters were miss-informed, 35 polls were impacted by violence due to suspicion of fraud; 25-35% of voters were disenfranchised. Others reported that names of those who perished in the earthquake were stuffed in the ballots to name a few of the problems. The Provisional Electoral Council, known as the CEP will be recounting the votes in the next 10 days. Some were concerned about the trustworthiness of the CEP.

As you can see, Haiti has loads of problems and needs a lot of prayers. To prepare our heart for this challenge when we pray today; let us consider our third point on what not to do when repenting. Don’t minimize sin. This is how we minimize our sins: We say, “I will sin now and ask God to forgive me later” or “God knows my heart” and “God understands my situation so I’ll go ahead and sin and He’ll overlook it.” Others say, “if God did not want me to do it He would not put those desires in me or put me in that situation.” When you minimize your sins, you are saying God and His word are not important and have no value to you. If you have been minimizing sin you have to repent.

Jesus’ first command was “Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” Matthew 4:17. If it was high on Jesus' priority list, it should be high on ours. When your conscience tells you that you have sinned, repent immediately.
1) Don’t to hide it. When we hide our sins and transgressions, we allow it to fester and grow. Sin thrives in darkness and in secrecy. Once it is exposed with the light and truth of God’s word it can no longer survive. When you hide your sins you will not prosper. He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy. Proverbs 28:13. Don’t hide sin, repent from it.
2) Don’t deny your sin. To deny is to declare untrue. When the Spirit of God convicts you about what you are doing; when your conscious bothers you; when a person or a group of people tell you what you are doing is wrong and when the word of God say it’s wrong, chances are they are right and you are wrong. Don’t deny it. Agree with them and repent.
Tomorrow we will look at some of the other points. As you pray, examine your heart to see if you are practicing any of the above points, if so, repent. If we are going to engage in spiritual battle for Haiti, we must be prepared. Repenting prepares us.

As we continue to focus on repentance, there is an area of our consciousness that becomes aware of when we go beyond the boundaries God sets for us. It triggers a warning that says “you have entered in the forbidden zone.” You feel uneasy, uncomfortable…convicted. David said in
Psalm 51:3 “For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.” He knew when he transgressed ways of the Lord; it was clear in his conscious that he crossed the line into the forbidden zone. Here is what you shouldn’t do when your conscience tells you that you have sinned: 1) don’t try to hide it, 2) Don’t deny your sin, 3) don’t minimize it, 4) don’t confuse remorse or regret with repentance, 5) don’t blame someone else and 6) don’t delay. Take advantage of the opportunity God has given you to repent. Today, as we spend time in prayer, ask the Holy Spirit to show you which one of these 6 you are likely to do, then ask God for the courage to repent. Tomorrow we will look at these 6 things you shouldn’t do in more detail.

When we choose not to repent but rather to hide or ignore our sins, we are choosing not to prosper in life. Proverbs 28:13 “He who covers his sins will not prosper,... When you evaluate your life do you consider it prosperous? When I say prosperous I am not talking about material possessions; though they may be a by-product of some prosperity but they are not true prosperity. I’m talking about peace of mind, a healthy relationship with loved ones and above all an intimate relationship with God. You could have money, cars, jewelry, houses and still be miserable. We have those examples all around us. You could have all the worldly possessions and still have a trouble mind and spirit because of unresolved sin. When you are weighed down with unconfessed sins, you cannot prosper. The second part of Proverbs 28:13 says “but whoso confesses and forsakes his sin will find mercy.” It is interesting to see how there is a contrast between not prospering because of covering your sin and finding mercy by confessing and turning away from our sins. That means when you receive mercy, you are prosperous. One of the definitions for mercy is: compassionate treatment of those in distress. How many are in distress, troubled in their minds or can’t sleep at night because of unconfessed sins. How many walk around depressed or with a heaviness on their heart all the time? You will never prosper under those conditions. By confessing and forsaking your sins you will feel the weight of the world lifted off of your shoulders. It will feel like the sun is breaking through the thick dark cloud that follows you around daily. The depression will lift and the joy of the Lord will find its way into your heart. As you spend time in prayer today, confess your sins, forsake them (Turn away from them) and see how prosperous you will become.

As Haitian churches and believers from every walk of life around the world engage themselves to pray for Haiti, we must go through the cleansing process of repenting from our sins. Isaiah 59:2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear. We need to reconnect with God on a deeper and more intimate level. As a result, our prayer will be heard, our actions will be productive and our efforts will begin to bring positive transformation in the rebuilding of Haiti. As we go through the first 7 Days of the 40 days of prayer talking about repentance, I realize how hypocritical we can be (myself included) when we examine our hearts to confess and repent form our sins. We find ways to justify sins we don’t really want to get rid of. We blame our family lineage (my anger comes from my mother’s side of the family), our nationality (That’s how we did it in Haiti) and our culture (We Haitians like it this way). When it comes to repentance we can’t trust ourselves to do an effective job. That is why we must ask the Lord to help us. Psalm 139-23-24 Search me O God and know my heart try me and know my thoughts see if there be any wicked way in me and lead me in the way everlasting. At some point today, find a quiet place and recite that verse as a prayer. Then sit in silent before the Lord and see what the Lord reveals to you. Whatever it is, thank God for revealing it then repent of it (Turn away from it).

The above passage begins by telling us to repent from a sin that generally grips the hearts of God’s people, pride. “If my people who are called by my name would humble themselves...” Humility is the remedy that God prescribes for this sin that usually goes unnoticed in the life of a believer. Pride is the sin that God hates the most and punishes the swiftest. Pride caused Satan and a third of the angels to be cast out of heaven. Pride caused Adam and Eve to be cast out of the Garden of Eden, and pride will cause us to not repent of our sin. “Pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way … do I hate” (Proverbs 8:13). God resists the proud and so do people. That is why conflicts are stirred up, because “only by pride cometh contention” (Proverbs 13:10). Pride is putting ourselves on an equal level with God. Pride is projecting on the outside what is not true on the inside. We spend time embellishing the outside so that we can project an image of perfection to others whereas, we don’t spend time examining the inside where the real person dwells. Our hearts and motives go unchecked to the point that we don’t even notice when we look down on someone because of their background and culture, the way they dress, their level of education or material possession. We have an attitude of superiority; that is pride. As Pastors and leaders we must take extra precautions in this area. We compare each other by our accomplishments and accolades, the size of our congregation or the appearance of our building. When we do that, we are entertaining pride. The only remedy for pride is humility. If we want God to heal our land, we must first begin to deal with the issue of pride. Before you pray today, take an inventory of your attitude, check your motives, and examine your heart to see what degree of pride is there. Pray and ask the Lord to help you to humble yourself and help you to recognize when pride lurking at the door your heart.

As God’s people, we must not only understand what true repentance is, we must also know how to repent sincerely. Often times our repentance is really regretting getting caught in sin or our conscious bothering for fear of getting caught and not really a sincere heartfelt repentance. You know deep down in your heart that if you could prolong your sinful situation and not get caught you probably would continue in it. Sincere repentance is after you have evaluated yourself you come to the conclusion you that you are wrong, wicked and wasting your time trying to justify your actions. You agree with God that you have sinned and cry out as David did in Psalm 51:1-2 “Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin”. Then you will realize that though you took advantage of people, used people and lied to people for your own personal gain, the bottom line is you sinned against God. “Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight” (Psalm 51:4). As believers, let us examine our repentance to make sure it is a sincere heartfelt repentance as we present ourselves to God.

GLOBAL PRAYER INITIATIVE OF HAITIAN CHURCHES

Beginning December 3rd Haitian Churches and Christian businesses have come together to pray for Haiti in an unprecedented way. Haitians from around the world will be gathering in churches to fast and pray, hold revivals and intercede on behalf of Haiti. This prayer movement will continue for 40 Days and will end on January 12, 2011 the first anniversary of the devastating earthquake that occurred in Haiti. Please join us by praying for Haiti everyday for the next 40 Days.


2 Chronicles 7:14
if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

In this passage God is instructing His people on what to do when they come upon difficult times. One of the most significant things God tells them to do is repent “Turn from their wicked ways.” Many do not understand what true repentance is. Many do not understand what kind of repentance that God accepts, For example; Esau failed to find repentance for simply selling his birthright even though he sought it desperately with tears while David committed what we would consider a greater sin and his repentance was acceptable. Esau’s repentance was faulty because he did not understand true repentance. He was a profane fornicator (see Hebrews 12:16–17), and he simply wanted to regain the blessings that he had lost. Whereas, when David was confronted with his sins of murder and adultery, however, he repented for the right reason. He wanted to restore fellowship with God. If we repent for any other reason than this we are not experiencing true repentance. (See Psalm 51) The Haitian Churches in Haiti and abroad must seek repentance from God not because we want to experience the blessings of God but because we want to restore our relationship with God. It is when our relationship with God has been reestablished for the right reason we’ll be able to experience his blessings. Let us pray and ask the Lord to help us to repent for the right reason, because we want and intimate relationship with God more than anything and watch what He will do with our lives and our country.
