Healing our land starts with believers not neglecting the poor. Jesus Christ loves and ministers to the poor people. He said the poor will always be among you. There aethree things we display when we neglect the Poor: 1) To neglect the poor is to Christ. Matt 25:42-45. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’ 44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ 45 “He will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ According to this verse when we neglect those who are hungry and thirsty you are neglecting Christ himself. Haiti have an over abundance of hungry and thirsty people. You can go right in to the capitol of that nation and see people who are hungry and thirsty. As soon as you come out of the airport they greet you with their hands extended out begging for food and money. If you ever want to minister to Christ, go to Haiti and serve. Healing our land begins by giving a helping hand to the hungry and thirsty. If we take care of their physical hunger and thirst, they will be open to receive food for their spiritual hunger and thirst.

PRAY: Ask God to help us meet their need for physical and spiritual Hunger and Thirst.

ACT: Get involved in supporting ministries that are already feeding the hungry and thirsty.

Healing our land includes addressing poverty. The poor, the lowly, the outcast and the destitute are words that describe majority of the people living in Haiti. Haiti is known as the poorest country in the western hemisphere and this was before the earthquake. Now, Haiti has plunged deeper into its poverty and we cannot sit idly by and do nothing. In Haiti you have the rich and you have the poor. There are virtually no middle class citizens. Jesus was very concerned about the poor; Jesus identified with the poor for He himself lived as one. Matthew 8:20 Jesus replied, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head. As Jesus proclaimed His mission on earth in Luke 4:18-19, it was primarily to the poor; “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor. Also, Jesus’ main audience was the poor. Where ever Jesus went the poor followed Him and He preached to them, He ministered to them and He loved them.

PRAY: Ask God to give us a heart that longs to help the poor.

ACT: GIVE! Give consistently, Give constructively, Give passionately and Give abundantly.

Healing our land includes creating opportunities for women in Haiti to help rebuild Haiti after the earthquake. While a majority of Haitian women have shouldered the responsibility of meeting the needs of children, the elderly, orphans, homeless and thousands of newly disabled people, they are often overlooked when it comes to making policy in areas that affects the very people they are the “experts” in providing care for. It was also after an earthquake that Jesus used the women who served him to set policy. Matt 28:2 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. Prior to Jesus, never before have a Rabbi used women to go tell the good news of God. A new policy was set and women were at the forefront of it. They were in essence evangelist. Matt 28:10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.” The earthquake in Haiti created an opportunity to begin setting new policies. Women are the backbone of Haiti; they are the primary caretakers and primary provider therefore, they should be involved in making policy. As Jesus sets the example, Haiti should follow.

PRAY: Ask the Lord to open doors for the women of Haiti to have a strong voice in making policy.

ACT: The Church could mobilize women groups to begin to effect policy in their own little community and then involve other communities; and as it begins to bring positive changes, it will affect the nation.

Healing our land includes Justice for Women in Haiti

Healing our land includes justice for Haitian women. As we mentioned yesterday Jesus was very concerned about women in a time where Rabbis avoided women. Women could not sit at a Rabbi’s feet and learn. Jesus however, not only welcomed women to serve in his ministry, He taught them also. Luke 10:39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. Jesus cares for the hurting women. The woman who washed Jesus’ feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair (see Luke 7:36-48) was a hurting women. The woman at the well was a hurting woman at the well was a hurting woman and Jesus tended to their pain.
Many of our Haitian women in Haiti are hurting. One of the greatest injustices against our Haitian women in Haiti after the earthquake is rape. Rape was already a serious problem in Haiti even before the earthquake. The United Nations reported in 2008 that almost half of the girls and young women living in slums like Cité Soleil and Martissant had been raped. Since the earthquake the situation for women has gotten even worse, rights groups say. Rapes have gone up threefold in Port-au-Prince, according to Refugees International, a Washington-based group.

PRAY: Ask the Lord to 1. Help Haiti establish a just justice system, 2. Safe-House for women who have been raped and 3. Support for rape victims who have to raise the child of a rape.

ACT: The Haitian Churches in US and Haiti can provide numbers 2 & 3 from the above prayer requests.

The next group of people we will be focusing on as we ask the Lord to heal our land are the women. Jesus was also concerned about the women. In a day and time when Rabbis would not entertain women in their presence, Jesus not only welcomed them, women played a major role in His ministry. They were very resourceful to Jesus’ ministry and met many of His needs; In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there (Mark 15:41). Jesus depended on the women who followed him to provide for His basic needs that allowed His ministry to be effective. We will look at some of those need as the week progress. Haitian women are very resourceful to Haiti. Aside from their vital roles as mothers and providing basic needs for their families; they are the backbone of the commerce industry in Haiti. When you go to the market place they are the primary merchants. They are the movers and shakers. They know how to negotiate and make deals. Though they work in deplorable conditions, putting food on the table for their family and sending their children to school are their priorities.

PRAY: Ask the Lord to help the women in Haiti to make ends meet and improve their working and living conditions.

ACT: Support organizations that provide micro-loans to women. These micro-loans allow women to start their own businesses Many of them have been very successful.

Jesus loves children and is very concerned about their well being. There are two types of people God said He would avenge; they are widows and orphans (children without parents). When it was normal for Rabbis to shun children, Jesus welcomed them and embraced them. He used children to illustrates how we need to become if we are to enter the kingdom of heaven (see Mark 10:13-16). Also, in Mark 9:36-37 it says, He took a little child and had him stand among them. Taking him in his arms, he said to them, 37 “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.” Jesus connected treating children kindly by welcoming them in His name with welcoming Jesus himself. When was the last time you made a child feel welcome in your presence. In Haiti, often the rule is; children should be seen and not heard whereas; Jesus demonstrated children should be seen and heard.

PRAY: Ask God to elevate the needs of the children of Haiti and bring it to the forefront of the media so that it may receive proper attention.

ACT: Support organizations that are giving children a voice. Organizations such as Children In Need Haitian Project. Go to www.cinhp.org visit and support their work.

Today, as we celebrate the birth of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ and also pray for the children in Haiti, we realize that they have something in common. The baby Jesus and the children in Haiti needed someone to protect them and care them because of the dangers that threatened their lives. When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” Matthew 2:13 Jesus’ life was threatened and needed protection from Herod. There are still many with the spirit of Herod in Haiti who wants to harm our children. It is our responsibility to pray and act on their behalf. There are several good organizations who are in Haiti helping to provide and protect our children I invite you to check out www.restorehaiti.com. Restore Haiti is partnered with Restoration Ministries, a local church in Jacmel, Haiti to provide a child sponsorship program. This program has grown to provide over 120 children per day with a hot meal and education that includes tuition, school uniforms and books. The number of sponsored children is increasing daily as more sponsors come on board. Visit their website and see what else they are doing.
PRAY: Ask the Lord to raise up people who will help protect, provide and guide and children in Haiti.
ACT: Support individuals and organizations such as “Restore Haiti” who will provide a safe haven for our children in Haiti.
